Under MCL 380.1284b, Michigan school districts cannot start their school year until after Labor Day. If a school district seeks to start its school year prior to Labor Day, it must receive a waiver from the Department of Education. This law requires a school district to host a public hearing before a decision on the Labor Day waiver is made.
