TITLE: Director of Special Education

QUALIFICATIONS: Certified teacher in the State of Michigan. Master's Degree in
Special Education Administration. State of Michigan approval
as a Special Education Director. Successful experience as a
classroom teacher and administrator. Local School district
experienced preferred. Such alternatives to the above
qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate
and acceptable.

REPORTS TO : Superintendent of Schools

JOB GOALS: Assist the Board of Education and Superintendent in developing
facilitating, and to continually evaluate and modify a plan for
special education programs and services in cooperation with
constituent school districts. To insure compliance with all local,
state and federal plans, regulations and laws.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide leadership in establishing new programs and the developing of an
improved understanding of existing programs.
2. To communicate effectively the content and implications of federal and
state laws, regulations and policy statements pertaining to the
education of children with disabilities to the constituent school districts.
3. To work effectively with other professional personnel and public and
private agencies who provide services to students with disabilities.
4. Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining and filing all reports,
records and other documents legally required or administratively
useful.
5. To plan an effective district-wide Child Find Process.
6. Provide general consultation to teachers and administrators from local
education agencies regarding special education, i.e., planning, programs,
facilities and services.
7. Develop a close working relationship with other local and state agencies
to promote and provide expanded services to all handicapped persons.
8. Provide and disseminate information to LEA's related to State Department
directives, codes, guidelines and current trends in Special Education.
9. Develop a means and promote expanded community understanding,
support, and involvement with Special Education programs and services.



10. Maintain contact with the Special Education Parent Advisory Committee
and parents of the students enrolled in the Special Education program.
11. Represent the Menominee County ISD as state regional Special Education
meetings.
12. Develop and maintain procedures for budget preparation, management,
financial accountability and reporting.
13. Prepare school, staff, and federal reports in an efficient and timely manner.
14. Establish and maintain an efficient and effective office management system.
15. Establish and maintain an accountable system to ensure appropriate super-
vision and evaluation of ISD special education staff and programs.
16. Establish and maintain an accountable system to ensure and maintain
well qualified local and ISD personnel.
17. Supervise the recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, and evaluating of all
special education personnel.
18. Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development for
keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and approved
techniques and attending appropriate professional meetings and conventions.
19. Report monthly to the Superintendent and Board of Education developments
relative to Special Education.
20. Perform other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the
Superintendent.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

A twelve (12) month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board
Of Education.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the
Board of Education's Policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel.
