TITLE: Bus Driver

QUALIFICATIONS: As set by the State certification authorities for school bus
drivers: (a) certification in school bus safety education;
with follow-up 6 hour continuing school bus safety education;
(b) Commercial Driver's license (CDL); (c) Air Brake Test; and
(d) must be able to lift and position children and adult students.

REPORT TO: Director of Special Education

SUPERVISES: Bus aide, if applicable

JOB GOAL: To transport students between home and school, field trips and other
school related activities in accordance with state and federal statues
and Board/Administrative Policy.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

(1) The driver is responsible for keeping and following an accurate time schedule.
(2) The driver is responsible for maintaining mileage logs and maps; a copy of
their map and route time schedule shall be on the bus.
(3) Before each scheduled bus run, do a driver walk around consisting of:
(a) checking headlights
(b) alternating red lights and amber lights
(c) hazard lights
(d) brake lights
(e) running lights, clearance lights and directionals
(all working, clean and undamaged)
(f) emergency doors; clearance lights, and
directionals (all working, clean and undamaged)
(g) exhaust system; securely mounted and no holes
(h) check all convex and west coast mirrors; must
be set and clean
(i) windshield wipers working
(j) horn working
(k) tires; inflation (use tire iron);sidewalls; bulges,
cracks, cuts; rims; missing or loose
(4) Driver interior walk through: seats secure, all harnesses, belts
and wheel chair anchor systems working and undamaged.
(5) Correctly operates and maintains hydraulic lift and wheel chair ratchet
anchor system.

 

(6) Regular oil changes done on vehicle every 2 thousand miles.
(7) Driver is responsible for maintaining discipline.
(8) Driver is responsible for safety of students transported, including
assurance that severely and preschool handicapped students
are under supervision when they are left off bus.
(a) students are secured with harness restraints
(b) lifting and positioning of children and
adult students
(9) Driver is responsible for reporting to maintenance crew any
bus trouble or needed repair.
(10) Transports only authorized students.
(11) Assumes responsibilities for confidentials of information regarding
students, staff and program.
(12) Reports all accidents and completes required reports.
(13) Drivers may be off buses while students are on board only if other
staff are on board to supervise.
(14) Warm up time: in fall and spring 10 minutes; in cold weather,
20 to 30 minutes depending on how cold.
(15) Wash bus every 30 days: (a) windows, lights and mirrors cleaned as
often as necessary for good visibility; (b) bus swept every day.
(16) At end of each school year, each driver will clean bus thoroughly
outside and inside, seats, ceilings, sidewalls, floor and windows.
(17) When driver leaves his/her bus, shut it off and take key.
(18) Keep entrance step of bus free from ice build-up.
(19) Drivers shall reduce gas line freezing by keeping gas tank half
full at all times.
(20) Fire extinguishers to be fixed or secured in bracket, tag must
be legible.
(21) Windows open no more than 3 notches from top or 4 inches.
(22) The driver performs any other duties which are generally and
customarily performed by bus drivers or any duties which are
assigned by the Menominee County Intermediate School District
Board of Education and/or Administration, subject to state and
Federal law and board policy.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Hours, days, wages and fringe benefits as specified by Board action.

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with Board Policy
on evaluation of para-professional personnel.
