Parental Rights. Michigan State Law 380.1561(3) allows children and youth to be homeschooled by parents or guardians instead of attending public school. A child being educated in a child's home by his or her parent or legal guardian is to receive instruction in reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar.
Textbooks and Instructional Materials. It is the responsibility of the parent to purchase the textbooks and the instructional materials they deem necessary. Parents might want to search the internet by using search prompts such as home school curriculum, home school associations, or correspondence schools. The Michigan Department of Education link listed below also provides links to resources.
Course Records. It is highly recommended parents keep thorough records of the courses the student has completed. If a child enrolls in a public school after homeschooling, it is the right of the public school to assign him or her to the most appropriate grade level based upon achievement tests and/or course completion records.
