In the State of Michigan, curriculum, instruction, and assessment is based upon the 1996 Michigan Curriculum Framework. This document details the content standards and benchmarks for English/language arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. It also details four teaching and learning standards, seven assessment standards, and professional development standards.

In 2001, to assist teachers in implementing the Michigan Curriculum Framework, a document clarifying the standards and benchmarks was developed. The document, MI Climb, provides more concise definitions and examples of classroom instruction and assessment for each of the standards and benchmarks in the four core academic areas.

In 2004, the State of Michigan issued the Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs)for English/language arts and mathematics. The GLCEs were developed to guide the content of the state-wide grades 3-8 grade level specific assessment tests in reading and mathematics as required by the No Child Left Behind federal law.

The Michigan Educational Assessment Program or MEAP, is responsible for assessing Michigan students on their proficiency of the Michigan Curriculum Framework assessible content standards and benchmarks outlined in the Grade Level Content Standards and Benchmarks (GLCEs).
